A gift idea for the gardener in your life

My days have a simple rhythm: kids off to school, a dog walk after lunch, and somewhere between that and the afternoon pickup, I make things.

This holiday season, I’m sharing that handmade spirit in Make & Give: seven weeks of gift making, with a new idea each week from November 5 through December 17. Follow along on Instagram for fresh handmade gift inspiration each week. Follow along on Instagram

What I'm making this week

Gardener’s hand soap makes a thoughtful handmade gift for anyone who loves time in the garden. Melt-and-pour soap base keeps it simple, while finely crushed walnut shells add a little exfoliating texture. Pour the mixture into molds, let it set, and finish with a simple label.

A quick mixing tip: Cut the soap base into small cubes and melt it in short bursts, stirring between each, so it doesn’t overheat.

Plant Note: Rosemary

“There's rosemary, that's for remembrance,” says Ophelia in Hamlet. Rosemary has long been associated with remembrance and has found its way into wedding bouquets and holiday greenery.

I love tucking a sprig beneath the twine on a gift. It smells lovely and adds a thoughtful finishing touch.

A bar of gardener’s hand soap makes a thoughtful gift for someone who loves getting their hands in the soil. Once it’s set, wrap it with a simple label and add the ingredients on a small tag.

Label Decoded: "Tocopherol"

Tocopherol is a form of vitamin E. You may see it in lotions and oils, where it can help slow the oils’ oxidation. It’s an antioxidant, not a preservative.

Warmly,
Julia
